Nice summary Derek. As I watched the firs potion of the game, I felt like the Sixers were only continuing some recent disturbing trends. Their ability to put a bad first half behind them saved this game.
Like you, I still have concerns. For the past couple of weeks I have continually espoused my concern that the surge in three-point shooting was a mirage--nothing more than a statistical blip on the radar. I think you are seeing that now. In addition, they do need to take care of the ball a bit better, but a team that plays the temp that the Sixers play will have to live with a certain number of turnovers. Turnovers are about giving the other teams possessions but becuase the Sixers run so frequently, they are able to make up a few possessions. One final note: Brand was excellent last night. His defense was crucial to the victory and he found his rhythm on offense. If the Sixers get that Elton Brand for the next few months a home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs is not out of the realm of possibility. Comments (2)
I think the Sixers three point shooting will come back to life to an extent. I don't see why they can't be about 34-35% if they take the right shots within the flow.
Derek makes a good point about Brands defense on the pick a roll. That in itself should help them cut down on opponents open threes. Brand also showed some great timing on defense. He really can take advantage of being the "second" shotblocker next to Sam or Speights. He may not be explosive, but his positioning is flawless- and leads to no goaltends and less fouls. I'm thinking Green's minutes are about to be at an end. I can't see how they can leave him in the starting line-up, esp given how they get killed in the early 3rd. I've even come around 180 with Ivey to where I'd rather him get Green's minutes since he brings so much more energy. Comments (3)
I still haven't fully come around to Ivey. I think what we're seeing is probably not indicative of what we're going to get the remainder of the season. I'd be playing a lot more of Iguodala/Young on the wings, with Williams getting the bulk of the minutes off the bench (sliding Iguodala to the 3 for about half of his minutes), and using Green to fill in the remaining guard minutes. I'd also virtually cut out Evans minutes, and play Brand/Dalembert/Speigths/Thad for the entirety of the big minutes, with Theo picking up when guys get in foul trouble.

"For the past couple of weeks I have continually espoused my concern that the surge in three-point shooting was a mirage"
I' not sure it's a complete mirage. I think they're a little better than they were to start the year, but I think they're closer to their November/December 3 pt shooting than they were the January. Even with their two bad games they're still shooting 39.9% for the month from 3. They're probably about a 33-34% shooting team, which would still be near the bottom of the league, but better than the 23% they hit in December. My biggest concern is, far and away, defending the 3. There's no reason this team should be having this problem defending the 3 with the shotblockers they have in the frontcourt. It's not even just off the pick and roll (which Sammy hurts them in), but also in dribble penetration which we're rotating from the wings too quickly on. We have the big men depth to not overly protect the shotblockers like we are. Comments (2)
(Copy of what I posted at depressed fan)
Regarding 3 pt defense, I agree they should be better at it. They have quick, motivated defenders on the wings (but lousy defenders at the point) and decent support from shot blockers in the frontcourt. In the rights system they should be better than average perimeter defenders. These are the issues I see: 1. Too much help. Either cheating for steals or helping against penetration, the backcourt players are way to willing to leave shooters. 2. Horrible/stupid play on pick and roll. This is usually the problem of the big (Sam or Speights) not effectively showing enough when their man is setting a pick. Watch how Brand (and Evans) aggressively stop the guard from going over top. This is what the others have to go. If you can turn back the driver it will give the defense enough time to recover. 3. Failing to ID hot shooters. When Kidd, Peja or Nate gets hot they need to be able to change their scheme to completely shut out that shooter. Make someone else beat you. 4. Terrible PG defenders. Lou/Miller cannot prevent penetration. Penetration almost always leads to fouls or open shots. Miller has strength/savvy but no quicks, while Lou is the flip side. ...I was thinking of fleshing this out into a full post, but I think their 3 pt defense will come around now that Brand is back. Agreed. I didn't mean to imply that they would hover at the bottom of the league all season. However, when they started knocking down threes consistently the media would lead you to believe that by DiLeo simply telling them to shoot they miraculously started falling. I don't think it is a major concern, as they showed last night they could win without the three ball. I'm with you, the perimeter defense is the primary concern at this point. I think it goes beyond simply defending the arc too. They do not pressure ballhandlers and rarely extend their defense. Entry passes to the post are almost never contested. As a whole, the perimeter defense has been poor the last few games.

FWIW, at the season tickeholders meeting (video at deressed fan) Dileo talked about a 2nd, more aggressive full court trap that the team has worked on. I think we will see more trapping soon.
